Rhodochrosite is a pink to rose red variety of the mineral Spinel (MgAl2O4). Its name comes from the Greek for "rose-pink" and was given due to its color when it was first discovered. From the second half of the 1800's until 2007, it was mined in only one place: Rosia Montana in Transylvania, Romania. It is also found in Bolivia, Argentina, and Brazil. Rhodochrosite is an array of pink hues with a smooth texture that feels like velvet when rubbed together between your fingers.
